Genesis – “Where It All Begins”

It’s no coincidence that Canada’s first-ever well dedicated to Natural Hydrogen resulted in a discovery.

MAX Power’s Lawson well is located in the heart of the company’s 475-km Genesis Trend, a massive geological corridor whose entire eastern border is flanked by the Prairie Evaporite.

The Evaporite, which hosts the world’s largest reserves of potash, acts as a “Salt Barrier” or “Wall” (salt is impermeable). As Natural Hydrogen and associated gases like Helium migrate up-dip from the southwest, they are “blocked” by the Salt Wall and accumulate in reservoirs formed by sediments.

Add the right source rocks and migration pathways, plus the “traps” and “seals” created by the Evaporite, and you have the perfect recipe for Natural Hydrogen-rich deposits — with strong potential for a value-added Helium component as Saskatchewan is Canada’s only Helium producer.

DISCOVERY CONFIRMED

Canada’s first confirmed subsurface Natural Hydrogen system, on the Genesis Trend in south-central Saskatchewan. Results announced January 16, 2026.

Hydrogen readings up to 286,000 ppm (28.6% H₂), confirmed by three independent labs
Sourced from an 8-metre fractured interval atop the basement complex
A confirmed “working system” — gas, reservoir and fractures all present
THE PATH TO COMMERCIALIZATION

Saskatchewan’s “Natural Hydrogen Industrial Corridor”

MAX Power’s discoveries sit within the Regina–Moose Jaw Industrial Corridor — south-central Saskatchewan’s largest industrial region and one of Canada’s most strategically positioned for energy commercialization. The Lawson Natural Hydrogen Complex lies roughly 80 km northwest of Moose Jaw, near Central Butte, with the Genesis Trend running directly through the corridor.

What makes the location exceptional is the infrastructure already in place — adjacency of a large-scale natural hydrogen system to ready-built industrial capacity and future demand centres is what positions the corridor to link discovery directly to commercialization, workforce growth and long-term regional economic expansion:

Although most of this hydrogen is likely to be impractical to recover, a small fraction (e.g., 100,000 Mt or 100 billion tons) would supply the projected hydrogen needed to reach net-zero carbon emissions for ~200 years. This amount of hydrogen contains more energy (~1.4 × 10 quadrillion MJ) than all proven natural gas reserves on Earth.
